so first of all, look at the url. there’s a bit of a change.
okay so at some point it hit me that the current system of just having a generic 5-digit number as the filename isn’t sustainable.
for the pretty obvious reason that eventually the folder will have a billion files in it. and i don’t want that. so instead, i’m splitting
them into epochs. now i’d put the previous parts in epoch-001, but then i’d break a whole buncha links. i dunno how to do redirects
in an easy way in astro yet, so i’ll leave that as an improvement for future me.
now the editing system. so some editors might relate with me here, but editing can be a draining effort. if you’re getting paid then there’s that, but if you’re doing it as a hobby, then putting all that work into something not many people’ll see is… well. hard. clearly that hasn’t stopped me, i’ve been doing videos for years. but it has slowed me. and not even in a quality over quantity kinda way — my output’s been downright decimated. and i’ve been wracking my brain over ways to address that.
and well i ended up doing a whole bunch of other projects on the side. while also doing streaming. and now i’m here. so.
this is my current plan that feels like it works.
Phase I — The Scrub - first, I open up DaVinci Resolve and immediately create a transcription of all the streams I’m gonna edit down. this way, i can go via the transcription, and instead of scrubbing through footage manually, i can use that as a context i can search through. so i basically go through the relevants part of the transcript - and anything that seems important or relevant (or funny) gets dumped into a timeline.
of course this entire phase is flexible and very lenient. so im not going to be painstakingly picking out and structuring the timing. not yet at least. but at some point i’ll be done, and have a pretty long sequence of footage. a very basic cut down. then, i upload this. show it to patrons, and then eventually link it to my discord. maybe i’ll link it on my site as well. add it to the playlist. the gist here is that i don’t pollute my channel’s output with something that’s barely edited --- instead i leave it accessible for people who consciously want to see it. keeps things clean. leading us onto…
Phase II — The Architecture - this is also pretty simple. we go back to the start like a very long typewriter and start adjusting the timing. only the timing. so the whole thing will basically be well-timed raw footage. this builds the foundation of the video — something we can build upon. this can have multiple passes, but each one is the same — just trimming further fat. same release process here, nothing special. then…
Phase III — The Touches - This is where we go all out — adding assets, effects, the works. Here, we spice it up.
this is nothing revolutionary - but there’s a little twist in the release process. and because of it, you now end up with multiple videos that act as an editing timeline. you’d have Pass 0 - technically the VOD itself, then Pass 1 — the Scrub, and so on. someone may see the most edited version, like it, and instead of waiting god knows how long - can optionally check in to see that there’s a Pass 1 of something new. and if they want to have a more chill edit? one that’s still raw footage - but timed well? they can check onto Pass 2 and onwards.
i dunno - i think this is just fun to talk about cause i am fixated on like, having a history. not necessarily a huge legacy - but at least a good trail of memories kept preserved. as such, i love things that result in creations. and it’s fun to share creations — so all of this essentially helps me get much more fulfilment than if i just uploaded the final part.
we all got our quirks.
